God Came Through

True stories, outside the Bible, of moments when God answered prayer or provided. Each is told as far as possible in the person’s own words, from accounts published before 1931, with a takeaway for today and a link to read the original.

George Müller · 1835 · Bristol, England

No money, no backers, no building, and a prayer for £1,000.

The story, in their own words

Bristol, December 1835. George Müller wanted an orphan house that would prove one thing: “that God is FAITHFUL STILL, and HEARS PRAYER STILL.” He had no fund and no committee. He decided he would not ask a single person for money.

For days he asked God to “take away every thought concerning it out of my mind if the matter be not of him.” Instead the conviction grew.

Then, on December 5, a single verse stopped him: “This evening I was struck, in reading the Scriptures, with these words: ‘Open thy mouth wide, and I will fill it.’” He did exactly that. “I was led to apply this Scripture to the orphan house, and asked the Lord for premises, one thousand pounds, and suitable individuals to take care of the children.”

Two days later: “To-day I received the first shilling for the orphan house.” Then “the first piece of furniture was given,--a large wardrobe.” Yet he went home “happy in the Lord, and full of confidence that the matter will come to pass, though but ten shillings has been given.” The next day a couple offered to serve “without receiving any salary whatever.”

What happened next: The rest of the money and the workers came in, one gift at a time, and the first orphan house opened in 1836.

So what?

God is not embarrassed by big requests. Müller asked for a building, a fortune and a staff, and God began answering within forty-eight hours, with a shilling and a wardrobe. Ask boldly, then watch for small first answers; they are the down payment on the rest.

“I am the LORD thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt: open thy mouth wide, and I will fill it.”

Today’s step

Write down one specific, “too big” need, and pray Psalm 81:10 over it every morning this week.
