God Came Through

True stories, outside the Bible, of moments when God answered prayer or provided. Each is told as far as possible in the person’s own words, from accounts published before 1931, with a takeaway for today and a link to read the original.

Story for · November 3

Smith Wigglesworth · Told 1924 · England

A young man bedridden so long he was fed with a spoon and never dressed.

The story, in their own words

Smith Wigglesworth was called to a house where “A young man had been sick for a long time confined to his bed in an utterly hopeless condition. He was fed only with a spoon, and was never dressed.”

Wigglesworth’s first act was an act of faith. “The weather was damp, and so I said to the people of the house, ‘I wish you would put the young man’s clothes by the fire to air.’” “Because I was persistent, they at last got out his clothes.”

Then he got out of the way. “The Lord said to me, ‘You will have nothing to do with this;’ and I just lay out prostrate on the floor. The Lord showed me that He was going to shake the place with His glory. The very bed shook.” “I laid my hands on the young man in the name of Jesus, and the power fell in such a way that I fell with my face to the floor.”

“In about a quarter of an hour the young man got up and walked up and down praising God.” He dressed in those warm clothes and walked into his parents’ room. “He said, ‘God has healed me.’ Both the father and mother fell prostrate to the floor as the power of God surged through that room.”

What happened next: Wigglesworth wrote that a woman in the same house, about to be taken back to an asylum, was healed that day too.

So what?

Faith gets the clothes ready. Wigglesworth prepared for the answer before it came, and then let God do what only God can do. Expect God to act, and live like it.

“If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God, and wilt do that which is right in his sight, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for I am the LORD that healeth thee.”

Exodus 15:26 (KJV)
