God Came Through

True stories, outside the Bible, of moments when God answered prayer or provided. Each is told as far as possible in the person’s own words, from accounts published before 1931, with a takeaway for today and a link to read the original.

Story for · October 30

D. L. Moody · 1892 · North Atlantic

Seven hundred people on a broken ship, water gaining on the pumps, and no sail in sight.

The story, in their own words

The North Atlantic, 1892. D. L. Moody was aboard the Spree when it broke down and began to sink. “We knew the ship was sinking when we came on deck, but there was no panic.” “The big engines of the ship were all working at the pumps, but the water was steadily gaining in spite of them.”

“I think that was the darkest night in all our lives. None of us thought to live to see the light of another day. Nobody slept.” Moody had seen war and cholera, “but I never was so sorely tried.”

On Sunday evening he did the one thing left. “As night approached I gathered those 700 quaking souls together and we held a prayer meeting. I think everybody prayed.” “I could with difficulty command my voice as I read the ninety-first Psalm.” He “prayed that God would still the anger of the deep” and bring them safely to port.

Then, remarkably: “That night I went to bed and slept, I felt that everything would be all right.” And: “At 2:30 o’clock in the morning a ship’s light was sighted, and in a few hours we were comparatively safe.”

What happened next: Once in port they held a thanksgiving service, “and then such singing as there was--such praises that went up.”

So what?

Prayer brings peace before it brings rescue. Moody slept on a sinking ship because he had handed it to God, and the light appeared that very night. “I believe and I know,” he said, “that God saved the Spree in response to our prayers.”

“Then they cry unto the LORD in their trouble, and he bringeth them out of their distresses.”

Psalm 107:28 (KJV)
