God Came Through

True stories, outside the Bible, of moments when God answered prayer or provided. Each is told as far as possible in the person’s own words, from accounts published before 1931, with a takeaway for today and a link to read the original.

George Müller · 1838 · Bristol, England

Not one penny in the orphan fund, and pounds needed within days.

The story, in their own words

Bristol, August 18, 1838. George Müller’s journal begins bluntly: “I have not one penny in hand for the orphans. In a day or two again many pounds will be needed. My eyes are up to the Lord.”

Somewhere in the city a woman had “put away her trinkets, to be sold for the benefit of the orphans.” Selling them would take time. But that morning, “whilst in prayer, it came to her mind, ‘I have this five pounds, and owe no man anything, therefore it would be better to give this money at once, as it may be some time before I can dispose of the trinkets.’”

“She therefore brought it, little knowing that there was not a penny in hand.” By that evening Müller could write: “Before this day is over, I have received from a sister five pounds.”

It was only the start of a hard season. Two weeks later he wrote, “This is the most trying hour that as yet I have had in the work, as it regards means; but I know that I shall yet praise the Lord for his help.” And again: “The Lord mercifully has given enough to supply our daily necessities; but he gives by the day now, and almost by the hour, as we need it.”

What happened next: Help kept coming in small amounts, just as each need arose.

So what?

Your quiet nudge in prayer may be someone else’s answer. God moved one woman to give now rather than later, on the exact day the fund hit zero. When He prompts you, don’t wait.

“Withhold not good from them to whom it is due, when it is in the power of thine hand to do it.”
