The Walk to Cheapside

Too weak to walk downstairs, two miles to go, and almost no money left.
The story, in their own words
London, 1852. Still weak from his near-fatal infection, Hudson Taylor was ordered to the country to recover, but he had almost nothing to pay for the trip. He refused to tell anyone. Instead, “I just told the LORD all about it.”
He sensed God directing him to the shipping office to ask about some wages he had been unable to draw. But how? “I had had to seek help in coming downstairs, and the place was at least two miles away.” So he asked: “I told the LORD that I was quite willing to take the walk if He would give me the strength.” And “sending the servant up to my room for my hat and stick, I set out, not to attempt to walk, but TO WALK to Cheapside.”
It was hard. He leaned on shop windows every few steps. But “GOD did wonderfully help me, and in due time I reached Cheapside.” At the office the clerk exclaimed, “Oh,” he said, “I am so glad you have come,” and paid the money. “I felt it was the LORD indeed who was providing for me.”
After paying a small medical bill, “I saw that the sum left was just sufficient to take me home; and to my mind the whole thing seemed a wonderful interposition of GOD on my behalf.”
What happened next: Taylor went home to recover with exactly enough money for the trip.
So what?
Faith doesn’t just ask for strength; it starts walking. God gave Taylor strength for each step and money to the shilling at the end. Take the step He’s shown you, and trust Him for the next.
“But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.”
Today’s step
Take the one step God has been showing you, even if you feel too weak to finish the whole road.
