God Came Through

True stories, outside the Bible, of moments when God answered prayer or provided. Each is told as far as possible in the person’s own words, from accounts published before 1931, with a takeaway for today and a link to read the original.

Today’s story · October 17

J. Hudson Taylor · His Hull years · Hull, England

One coin to his name, no dinner tomorrow, and a starving family on the stairs.

The story, in their own words

Hull, England. Young Hudson Taylor was training himself for China, where, he said, “my only claim will be on GOD.” So when his employer forgot his salary, he said nothing and prayed. One Saturday night he found “myself possessed of only a single coin--one half-crown piece.”

That Sunday night a poor man begged him to pray for his dying wife. Taylor followed him up “a miserable flight of stairs, into a wretched room.” What he saw broke him: “Four or five poor children stood about, their sunken cheeks and temples all telling unmistakably the story of slow starvation,” and a mother lay with “a tiny infant thirty-six hours old.”

Later he admitted the truth: “I could trust in GOD plus one-and-sixpence, but was not yet prepared to trust Him only, without any money at all in my pocket.” At last he gave the coin.

He reminded God “that he who giveth to the poor lendeth to the LORD” and asked “not to let my loan be a long one, or I should have no dinner next day.” Next morning a letter came. Inside, “a pair of kid gloves, from which, as I opened them in astonishment, half-a-sovereign fell to the ground. ‘Praise the LORD!’ I exclaimed; ‘400 per cent for twelve hours investment; that is good interest.’”

What happened next: Taylor said he then and there determined that “a bank which could not break should have my savings or earnings.”

So what?

You cannot out-give God. The moment Taylor let go of his last coin, he stopped trusting “God plus” and started trusting God. The Lord repaid him overnight, and the lesson lasted a lifetime.

“He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the LORD; and that which he hath given will he pay him again.”
