Story for · November 14

George Müller · 1846 · Bristol, England

A field for a new orphan house, a price too high, and an owner who wasn’t home.

The story, in their own words

Bristol, February 1846. Müller needed land for a large new orphan house. He heard of a field on Ashley Down and went to see the owner, but “he was not at home.” He tried the man’s business. Again, “he had just before left.”

He could have gone back at eight that evening. He chose not to: “judging that there was the hand of God in my not finding him at either place: and I judged it best therefore not to force the matter, but to ‘let patience have her perfect work.’”

The next morning he found the owner, who had a story of his own. “He told me that he awoke at three o’clock this morning and could not sleep again till five.” All that time “his mind was all the time occupied about the piece of land,” and he decided that if Müller applied, “he would not only let me have it, but for one hundred and twenty pounds per acre, instead of two hundred pounds, the price which he had previously asked for it.”

“How good is the Lord!” Müller wrote. “The agreement was made this morning, and I purchased a field of nearly seven acres.”

What happened next: Days later an architect wrote offering to draw the plans and oversee the building “gratuitously.”

So what?

When God goes ahead of you, even someone else’s sleepless night can be part of His plan. Müller refused to force a door, and God opened it wider and cheaper overnight. Patience is not passivity; it is trust that God is working on the other side.

“Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.”

Psalm 37:5 (KJV)

Today’s step

Name one door you’ve been trying to force, and leave it with God for a week.
