God Came Through

True stories, outside the Bible, of moments when God answered prayer or provided. Each is told as far as possible in the person’s own words, from accounts published before 1931, with a takeaway for today and a link to read the original.

Story for · November 11

George Müller · 1842 · Bristol, England

Four o’clock, tea at five, and nothing in the cupboards.

The story, in their own words

Bristol, February 21, 1842. The orphan houses had food for the morning, “but, as our stores had been so reduced at the end of last week, there was not enough for tea this afternoon.”

“Four o’clock had now come, one hour before the usual tea-time, when a brother from Somersetshire came to see the Orphan Houses, and put a sovereign into each of the boxes. Our great need soon brought out the money, and thus we were supplied.”

Later Müller learned how close it had been. The visitor “had but little time, and therefore rather hastily went over the houses. Had he stayed long and conversed much, as might have been the case, his donations would not have been in time for the tea.”

Four days later he wrote: “Greater than now our need had never been. Our trials of faith have never been so sharp as during this week... Yet neither this day has the Lord suffered us to be confounded.”

What happened next: The children had their tea, and the hard season kept being met day by day.

So what?

God cares about the timing of one afternoon meal. He even set the pace of a stranger’s visit so the gift arrived an hour early. No need is too small for His attention.

“Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.”

Matthew 6:8 (KJV)

Today’s step

Bring God one “small” need today you’d normally not bother praying about.
