God Came Through

True stories, outside the Bible, of moments when God answered prayer or provided. Each is told as far as possible in the person’s own words, from accounts published before 1931, with a takeaway for today and a link to read the original.

Story for · October 24

George Müller · 1838 · Bristol, England

The fund down from £780 to £20, thirty pounds needed in days, and no one told.

The story, in their own words

Bristol, July 1838. George Müller checked the books: “The funds, which were this day twelvemonth about seven hundred and eighty pounds, are now reduced to about twenty pounds.” Yet he wrote, “my faith is as strong, or stronger, than it was when we had the larger sum in hand.”

At two public prayer meetings he deliberately said nothing about the need. “I purposely avoided saying anything about our present necessities, and spoke only to the praise of God.” Why? “In order that the hand of God, in sending help, may be so much the more clearly seen.”

On July 22 he was walking in his little garden, thinking about one verse: “Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to-day, and forever.” Then the orphans’ need came to mind, and with it a settled thought: “Jesus in his love and power has hitherto supplied me with what I have needed for the orphans, and in the same unchangeable love and power he will provide me with what I may need for the future.”

“A flow of joy came into my soul whilst realizing thus the unchangeableness of our adorable Lord. About one minute after, a letter was brought me, enclosing a bill for twenty pounds.”

What happened next: Lean weeks followed, with help often arriving by the day, but the houses kept going.

So what?

The God who helped you before has not changed. Müller did not wait for the money to feel joy; he rejoiced in who God is, and the answer came one minute later. Remembering God’s past faithfulness is fuel for today’s faith.

“Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.”
