God Came Through

True stories, outside the Bible, of moments when God answered prayer or provided. Each is told as far as possible in the person’s own words, from accounts published before 1931, with a takeaway for today and a link to read the original.

Story for · November 1

J. Hudson Taylor · 1852 · London, England

A needle prick, a deadly infection, and a surgeon telling him to go home and put his affairs in order.

The story, in their own words

London, 1852. Medical student Hudson Taylor had pricked his finger with a needle the night before. The next day he grew violently ill. The demonstrator, “a very skilful surgeon,” told him to “get a hansom, drive home as fast as I could, and arrange my affairs forthwith. ‘For,’ he said, ‘you are a dead man.’”

Taylor’s first reaction was sorrow, “that I could not go to China; but very soon came the feeling, ‘Unless I am greatly mistaken, I have work to do in China, and shall not die.’” He told the surgeon so: “if so, however severe the struggle, I must be brought through.”

He could not afford the cab. He tried to walk, took two omnibuses, and reached home “in great suffering.” He “lanced the finger, hoping to let out some of the poisoned blood,” then “fainted away.” “Days and nights of suffering passed slowly by; but at length, after several weeks, I was sufficiently restored to leave my room.”

Then he learned the rest: “two men, though not from the London Hospital, who had had dissection wounds at the same time as myself, had both succumbed, while I was spared in answer to prayer to work for GOD in China.”

What happened next: Taylor recovered fully and later sailed for China.

So what?

When God has a purpose for you, He can carry you through what kills others. Taylor’s confidence was not in his own strength but in God’s call. Your life is in His hands, and so is your unfinished work.

“The LORD will perfect that which concerneth me: thy mercy, O LORD, endureth for ever: forsake not the works of thine own hands.”

Psalm 138:8 (KJV)

Today’s step

Ask God what “work to do” He has for you this year, and write down what comes to mind.
